This just breaks my heart. I can't imagine how anyone could be so cruel to a child. I know this little angel went straight to heaven where he can finally be safe and happy.

The name for this phenomenon of using one term or word in place of several words for the same thing is "metonymy". Genericization is just one kind of metonymy.

People just don't understand how science works. It takes time, data, and analysis to support or disprove a hypothesis. There is no good reason for scientists not to test the assumptions of large groups of people who are not trained scientists. Oftentimes those assumptions are incorrect.

I agree with what almost everyone has said here, including you. It reminds me of Elaine Aron's work on sensitivity, referring to sensitivity to external stimuli, whether physical, mental or emotional.

It says Netherlands. So if you are Dutch, I guess your government paid for the study. And if you aren't, well, I hope you will someday realize that science is worthy of public funding, even if many individuals don't comprehend the subtleties and the utility of the research.

Yeah! People in the southern parts of the country (southeast and southwest) often don't realize that air conditioning is NOT standard in most homes up north. Apartments, schools, many houses, etc. just aren't built with AC and it costs a lot of money to install a new unit.

That's exactly what I was thinking! How very sad, but almost bittersweet. And such a selfless action. But tragic that she will never have the opportunity to grow into the wonderful woman I'm sure she would have been.
